MultiBuy Discounts

16 December 2010

You may have noticed that coffee prices in the UK (and also in Europe) have recently increased dramatically in price. This is due to a number of factors, the main one being the cost of fuel which is used in both the roasting and transporting of coffee beans.

Many of our competitors have already, or will very shortly, increase their prices by as much as 20%. We're used to looking at things a different way here at A1 Coffee, so we've introduced 'MultiBuy Discounts' on most of our coffee and even on some cleaning products, coffee flavouring syrups and more.

This means that, just by buying slightly less often and stocking up when you do buy, we can pass on the savings in delivery costs to you in the form of a discount. So while our competitors are putting their prices up, we've kept most of ours the same, and some have even come down! Look out for the MultiBuy offers on our coffee and don't pay higher prices!

Jargon-Free Guide To Coffee Syrups

10 September 2010

Coffee Flavouring Syrups Explained

It’s only a few decades since the most adventurous any of us in the UK got with coffee was a jar of freeze-dried Maxwell House. Since then of course, things have changed beyond recognition in every High Street in the land, every restaurant, coffee shop and even pub now offers a bewildering array of coffees that you can have served exactly to your taste. Much of the coffee culture we now take for granted has been imported from America and Italy (the Italians with the basic coffees themselves - espresso, latte, cappuccino and the Americans with the marketing - Starbucks, cookies, etc, etc). Here at A1 Coffee, we stock pretty much every product line a coffee shop would ever need, and one area where we’ve seen considerable steady growth over the last year or two is in flavouring syrups. So we thought it was time to explain!

So What Are They?

Flavouring syrups for coffee are nothing new, but they’re now gaining rapidly in popularity as the coffee shop visitor looks for ever more exotic and elaborate versions of their favourite drink. Coffee syrups offer a massive variety of additional flavours that are added to the coffee during preparation, normally when being served as lattes or cappuccinos. We, for instance, stock around 60 different varieties, many of which are increasingly being ordered for home use.

Are They Only For Coffee?

Not at all. The only limit to their use is your imagination! Some of the flavours such as strawberry, orange and cherry make ideal toppings for ice cream and other desserts. Others are used by some of our customers in baking or producing sauces, while others such as mint, zabaglione and amaretto are great in sodas and cocktails. Whether you’d choose to use many of these flavours in coffee of course remains a matter of personal taste, and the old favourites are still the most popular, such as vanilla, hazelnut and caramel.

Aren’t They Unhealthy?

Considering that a lot of us like to enjoy a muffin or chocolate cookie with our coffee, it’s all down to moderation. A1 Coffee stocks the IBC (Italian Beverage Company) natural syrups, which aren’t packed full of chemical additives and nasty E numbers, which we think also improves the flavour. There are also sugar free versions by DaVinci, so you can have your skinny caramel latte with a clear conscience.

How Do I Use Them?

While you should freely experiment with various flavours to find which ones work best for you, it’s worth mentioning that they’re designed for use mainly in lattes and cappuccinos. This is simply because syrups work best in long milky drinks which prevent the syrups overtaking the flavour of the coffee itself, though a small amount of something like amaretto may work well in a double espresso. However, you should be aware that they aren’t best suited for use with instant or filter coffee, due to the way in which these coffees are blended, roasted and prepared. Americans will argue that this isn’t the case – French vanilla filter coffee for instance is incredibly popular Stateside, but doesn’t appeal as much to European pallets.

Anything Else I Should Know?

Not really. Don’t get ripped off by the big coffee shop chains who will charge you a fortune – they really aren’t that expensive if you know where to look. Try all the different flavours that you like the sound of until you find what works best for you, and don’t listen to any ‘coffee connoisseur’ who tells you you’re ruining your coffee – it’s you that’s drinking it after all!

Jargon-Free Guide To Cafetiere Coffee

03 September 2010

Our last article, ‘Jargon-Free Guide To Filter Coffee’ seems to have struck a chord with many of our customers who have thanked us for simplifying how to get the best out of your filter coffee machine. We therefore decided to apply the same no-nonsense approach to cafetiere coffee. Again, keep it simple and you can’t go wrong!

So What Is It?

Cafetieres (also known as French Press or Plunger coffee makers) are without doubt the simplest and cheapest way to make good coffee. It is simply a container containing a mesh plunger which is used to separate the coffee grounds from the coffee after brewing. You can then pour your cups or mugs out directly from the cafetiere. There are no expensive parts, no electrical connections and no difficult cleaning routines to follow. It’s also the most portable method – if you have access to boiling water, you can make great coffee!

How Do I Make Really Good Coffee?

OK, you’re just a few steps away from making great coffee. Follow this guide and you simply can’t get it wrong!

Ensure the cafetiere is clean and always use fresh coffee.

Use good coffee. A bit obvious this one, but you’re not going to turn rubbish coffee into good no matter how hard you try. Use the best you can find, such the Planet Java cafetiere coffee range, or Lavazza filter coffee (which is also suitable for use in cafetieres).

Heat the cafetiere first with some hot water, pour away, and then add one heaped dessert spoon of coffee per normal sized cup (cafetieres come in many sizes, so for instance, use 4 spoons of coffee if you are using a cafetiere to make 4 cups of coffee). Fill to within 1 inch (2.5 cms) of the top with water that’s just off the boil. Stir well for a few seconds before replacing the plunger and lid and leaving for at least 4 minutes. Push the plunger down slowly and carefully. Hey presto – perfect coffee!

Look after your equipment. After use, clean the cafetiere thoroughly ensuring the mesh in the plunger is washed to remove coffee grounds. Rinse through to remove any soap residue.

What Coffee Should I Use?

This isn’t the minefield that some ‘coffee experts’ will have you believe. It’s partly a matter of personal preference of course, and partly down to selecting a suitable blend. Most cafetiere coffee that’s been pre-ground and packaged by a reputable company is already blended and roasted to work with both cafetieres and filter coffee makers, and unless you’ve picked an own-brand that is suspiciously cheap, should be suitable for most uses. Be mindful that some of the household names available in supermarkets are not as good as you may think, and that you generally get what you pay for. Discount coffee may sound appealing, but it may not taste it!

Avoid single estate and origin coffees unless you’ve tried them before, or have some knowledge of such products. Being single estate, 100% Arabica or from a specific region is no guarantee that, once ground, the coffee will be suitable for use in a filter coffee machine. Again – keep it simple. Select a tried and trusted ‘omnigrind’ coffee such as Lavazza’s Qualita Rossa or Planet Java’s cafetiere range – these have already been refined over the years to ensure they’ll work perfectly every time.

Find a good wholesale coffee supplier either by recommendation or by buying a small amount first before placing any large orders – own brand coffee very dramatically and you don’t want to make an expensive mistake.

Anything Else I Should Know?

Not really. At A1 Coffee, we believe that keeping it simple means fewer mistakes and more time spent enjoying the coffee. Cafetieres are incredibly easy to use, and should therefore be an essential part of any coffee-lover’s kit.

Jargon-Free Guide To Filter Coffee

11 August 2010

Contrary to some of the guides you may find online for making great filter coffee, it’s neither difficult nor expensive. The whole point of filter coffee is convenience – it allows anyone to make a jug of really good coffee without needing to spend ages preparing it or requiring Barista-level knowledge of operating complex equipment. Ignore any advice that sounds overly complicated or fussy - keep it simple and you can’t go wrong!

So What Is It?

Filter coffee machines are designed to pass near-boiling water through a filter paper full of coffee into a jug below. The jug will normally sit on a hotplate allowing it to be used over a period of time. For this reason, they’re popular in offices, restaurants and reception areas where making fresh coffee every time someone wants a cup isn’t convenient. The coffee is widely available in both large packs and in pre-measured sachets to make a single jug, which is the preferred choice for most people as it ensures consistent strength every time and means there’s no mess.

How Do I Make Really Good Coffee?

OK, you’re just a few steps away from making great coffee. Follow this guide and you simply can’t get it wrong!

1.Use cold water and fresh coffee. If you are using pre-measured sachets, only open one when you’re about to make your coffee.

2.Use good coffee. A bit obvious we know, but you’re not going to turn rubbish coffee into a good one no matter how knowledgeable you are. Use a premium brand such as Lavazza filter coffee if you can, or a good alternative such as Planet Java coffee if you’re on a budget.

3.Don’t prepare coffee too far ahead, it’s far better to brew it when you need it. Leaving it stewing on a hotplate will ruin the flavour after about an hour, at which point you should pour it away and make a fresh jug. If you’re brewing into a flask, remember to warm it up first or you’ll be drinking lukewarm coffee for the rest of the day!

4.Look after your equipment. After a few weeks, oils deposited from the coffee will accumulate in your flasks, jugs and filter pans. Use a powder such as Bravilor cleaner to remove the deposits and prevent them from tainting the flavour of the coffee. Most commercial coffee machines are very easy to keep clean.

What Coffee Should I Use?

This isn’t the minefield that some ‘coffee experts’ will have you believe. It’s partly a matter of personal preference of course, and partly down to selecting a suitable blend. Most filter coffee that’s been pre-ground and packaged by a reputable company is already blended and roasted to work with filter coffee makers, and unless you’ve picked an own-brand that is suspiciously cheap, should be suitable to serve to your staff, customers, etc.

Select a tried and trusted filter coffee such as Lavazza’s Qualita Rossa or Planet Java All Day Filter Coffee – these have already been refined over the years to ensure they’ll work perfectly in any filter coffee machine.

Find a good wholesale coffee supplier either by recommendation or by buying a small amount first before placing any large orders – own brand coffee very dramatically and you don’t want to make an expensive mistake.

What About Filter Papers?

Easy. Never reuse them, never wash them and never pre-pack them in advance with ground coffee. Simply use them as and when required and dispose of them with the coffee grounds once you’ve brewed your coffee. They are inexpensive at around a penny each (the Planet Java brand in particular even includes them with the coffee for convenience), so there really is no need for some of the DIY alternatives you may read online such as straining it through a pair of tights, etc!

Coffee Shops Defy Recession With Rapid Expansion

30 October 2009

Some of the UK's biggest coffee shop chains and independent cafes have been defying the recession by going on a massive expansion spree according to a report in The Independant.

The six big multiple chains – including Caffe Nero and Costa Coffee – increased their combined shop numbers by 47 per cent to 2,095 in the UK over the year to September 2009, said The Local Data Company, although some chains have found the going tough.
Ben Price, the finance director of Caffe Nero, said: "We have traded pretty well through the whole recession and our like-for-like sales have stayed positive. It is about a coffee being a regular daily treat for people today, and it's the change of habits over the last 10 years, and that has been sustained through the downturn."

Independents also increased their shop numbers by 12.5 per cent in the top 10 cities, to 2,486, and rather surprisingly actually grew their overall share of the market by 1 per cent to 70 per cent. Economists had previously expected coffee shops to suffer from consumers cutting back on everyday spend during the recession, but some such as Whitbread-owned Costa Coffee, have certainly prospered - the store that it opened in Cardiff last week took its UK total to 1,000.

The chain reported an operating profit of £12.6m for the six months ending 27 August, up an astounding 72%. John Derkach, the managing director of Costa Coffee, said: "Places like Costa offer enormous value for money. For a couple of pounds you can get a decent cup of coffee and 45 minutes of peace and quiet in a nice environment." The chain, which operates in 23 countries, said the average transaction in its shops was £3.70.

Two other drivers of the growth in coffee shops are that they have become a more pleasant environment than in years gone by, offering extras such as Wi-Fi for business meetings, and operators have been able to arrange cheaper property deals given the glut of empty shops on the high street. Jeffrey Young, the managing director of Allegra, said: "Café culture itself is enormously powerful, and it is the modern form of the pub for many consumers."

Winter Is Coming!

21 October 2009

We were only talking in the office last week that winter's not far away and seasonal products will soon start selling quickly. Since then, sales of hot chocolate have gone crazy! Today is a beautiful autumn day here, and yet hot chocolate and Christmas coffee is leaving our warehouse like it's going out of fashion. I don't remember it being sold in such large quantities before - maybe it's a sign that people are expecting it to be a bad winter? Or maybe people just like chocolate more than ever before? Now I come to think of it, I might even put the kettle on so we can all have one......

Winter Olympics 'Official Coffee' Shock!

5 October 2009

Anyone who has visited Canada will probably be aware that Vancouver has established itself as North America's 'coffee capital', boasting more coffee shops per capita than most major international cities, with Canada’s Tim Hortons coffee being considered the unofficial national drink. The 2010 winter Olympic Games are being held in the city, allowing it to show off its culture and famously high quality of living on the world stage. However, Vancouver media have been horrified to find that the ‘official games coffee’ will be provided by, of all people, Coca Cola! Expect some disgruntled coffee connoisseurs then....... .

Starbucks Set To Revamp UK Outlets

21 September 2009

Business analysts reported last week that Starbucks have fared the worst of all the major UK coffee chains in the recent financial downturn with sales down by up to 7%. It is rumoured to be planning a return to its 'grungy and individual' roots by allowing each outlet to apply some individuality, even using secondhand furniture and displaying works by local artists.

Laura Chesters, the news editor of Property Week, reported that the success of the company was also partly responsible for its recent troubles. 'It is suffering a backlash like the Tesco backlash' she said, and added that the brand had started to lose its appeal among consumers.

Four non-branded Starbucks outlets are being tested in Seattle, with the first being called '15th Avenue Coffee & Tea'. Watch this space!

Starbucks Announces Fairtrade Deal.

16 September 2009

Starbucks has announced at the beginning of this month that all of its espresso sales in the UK and Ireland will be Fairtrade certified, signalling a major shift in strategy.

Last year, Starbucks bought around 9,000 tons of Fairtrade coffee, equating to around 10 percent of all worldwide sales. This year, that figure is expected to more than double to 19,000 tons, establishing itself as the world's leading buyer of Fairtrade coffee. This change is in reaction to consumer demand here in the UK, which has undergone a dramatic shift in the last few years. Other retailers are expected to be watching closely!

Smart Cafe Product Range

14 September 2009

From early next week, we will be stocking a great range of products from Smart Cafe, including hot mugs and travel cafetieres. These are becoming very popular in offices where plastic cups look unsightly, present a health and safety risk, and are expensive to buy and dispose of. They make a great addition to any office, or an excellent gift for all coffee lovers!

Sales of what the chain describes as ‘posh teas’, an undetailed description, are up 48 per cent. At the same time, sales of teapots and cafetieres are up 56 per cent.

Coffee May Help Treat Alzheimer's

18 August 2009

A few cups of coffee a day may stave off Alzheimer's disease and could even help to treat the condition, according to new research reported by Sky News.

Mice who were fed coffee showed big signs of mental improvement Scientists in Florida uncovered the evidence during tests on animals, and now hope to follow up their findings with trials on humans. US neuroscientist Dr Gary Arendash, who led the research, said: "The new findings provide evidence that caffeine could be a viable 'treatment' for established Alzheimer's disease, and not simply a protective strategy. "That's important because caffeine is a safe drug for most people. It easily enters the brain, and it appears to directly affect the disease process." Patients with Alzheimer's disease have sticky clumps of abnormal protein in the brain called beta amyloid plaques.

Caffeine was given to mice which had been genetically engineered to develop dementia symptoms and researchers recorded a 50% reduction in levels of beta amyloid protein in their brains. The creatures also developed better memories and quicker thinking. The equivalent dose in humans would be 500 milligrams of caffeine a day, or just 5 cups or ordinary coffee or 14 cups of tea. But people with high blood pressure or women who are pregnant should avoid too much caffeine.

Dr Huntington Potter, director of the Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Centre (ADRC) in Tampa, where the studies were conducted, said: "Our goal is to obtain the funding needed to translate the therapeutic discoveries in mice into well-designed clinical trials." The new research was reported in two studies published online in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. Neil Hunt, chief executive of the Alzheimer's Society, said: "This research in mice suggests that coffee may actually reverse some element of memory impairment."
